Recent Farmers Market Finds

Last weekend I stopped by the Piermont, NY farmers market and it was every bit of Pinterest magic. There were charming vendors,  homemade jams, and endearing background music. Aside from enjoying the sweet Sunday vibes, starting a business myself has taught me the importance of shopping small whenever I can, especially when it comes to what I consume. There are so many reasons to support local farmers and artisans at markets, but here are some of the most important reasons.

Enjoy The Season

When you shop at farmers markets you take advantage of produce that is in season, meaning it is fresh and reflects its true flavors. Not only do seasonal produce have more nutrients because it’s harvested at peak ripeness, but it also helps to diversify your diet.

Support Local Farmers

As you can probably imagine, shopping small is so important to me. Supporting local farmers is a fun and easy way to support a small and local business.

Protect The Environment

When you shop local, you skip the pollution and extra packaging that comes with transporting food across the country. Food at farmers markets are typically transported shorter distances and grown using methods that minimize impact on the earth.

Nourish Yourself

When you’re shopping  at large food retailers, you are putting yourself at risk of consuming high processed and pesticide ridden food that contains hormones and GMOS.  Most food found at farmers markets are minimally processed and farmed using sustainable techniques.

Connect With The Community

One of the most fun parts of shopping small is connecting with the farmers and artisans and hearing their story. It’s so interesting to hear about the background of the business and the origin of the food. It’s so inspiring to see local people making  a living for themselves and feeding the community.

My Farmer’s Market Picks

There were so many delicious and nutritious choices at the market, but ultimately I took home a mason jar of Sea Salted Watermelon Sangria from Manor Sangria. This sangria is absolutely refreshing and tasty. It’s the perfect addition to a summer dinner.

I also picked up pure raw honey from Crannóg Apiary based in Pearl River, NY. I drink matcha everyday and I sweeten it with brown sugar and honey, so I’m very happy to be using honey from a local beekeeper.
